Fundamental Acoustical Finger Force Calculation for Out-of-Plane Ultrasonic Vibration and its Correlation with Friction Reduction

Abstract: This article presents a method for estimating the parameters of a biomechanical impedance approximation model for a finger interacting with a rigid beam vibrating outof-plane at ultrasonic frequencies, and illustrates correlation results of these parameter magnitudes with vibration amplitude friction modulation detection threshold.

“…To achieve levitation and open a gap between the skin and the plate, a large acoustic force is required. In fact, the correlation between the acoustic force and the friction force reported in [17] is also found in this work. The levitation force is derived from a linear combination of impedance measurements and therefore does not consider the state of the contact.…”

“…This hypothesis of infinite contact stiffness is the basis of the method used in [8], [14] to find the impedance of a fingertip offline or during the interaction. The harmonic contact force at the interfacẽ f c , derived in [17], can be recovered from:…”

“…10.b) when compared to the vibratory transfer function V . The variability between plate vibration and friction reduction efficiency reflects differences in the bio-mechanical properties of the finger skin, which were also observed in [45] and have been shown to significantly affect subjects' perception [46]. Therefore, stimuli generation on surface haptics should focus on controlling the frictional force and friction coefficient rather than the ultrasonic amplitudes, as proposed in [47], [48].…”

“…The vibration of the plate creates a levitation pressure, thereby reducing the number of asperities in contact. During this process, a portion of the acoustic energy is transferred to the fingertip [21], [22]. Upon a change in normal force or actuation force, we observe that both the contact and the impedance are affected, see Fig.…”
