Functionalization of polycarbonate with proteins; open-tubular enzymatic microreactors

Abstract: This paper examines a set of techniques for the immobilization of enzymes on the surface of microchannels fabricated in polycarbonate (PC). Our experiments identify the method that uses combined physico-chemical immobilization on a layer of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a reproducible vista for the robust immobilization of proteins. As an example, we demonstrate the fabrication, throughput and stability of an open-tubular reactor draped with alkaline phosphatase (ALP, EC 3.1.3.1) as a model enzyme. As PC is suita… Show more

“…[17] Commercial significance makes invertase an ideal model for immobilization studies; consequently, there are many invertase immobilization studies with different carriers in the literature. [18][19][20] Polyethyleneimine (PEI), a functional amine group containing macromolecular ligand, has been utilized for the immobilization of different enzymes [4,[21][22][23] and also for invertase [24][25][26][27][28] with different supports in the literature. Yamasaki et al figured out a method for the attachment of invertase on cotton flannel covered with PEI.…”

“…The biological function confers new possibilities of applications particularly in biochemistry, medical analysis or for clinical diagnosis [4,5]. Most of the time, the biofunctionalization was performed after microfabrication by exploiting the interaction properties of the support with biomolecules or the binding properties of linkage agents [6]. However, these kinds of immobilization processes often require numbers of preparation steps, a significant consumption of…”
