Functionalization of o-carboranes via carboryne intermediates

Abstract: Carborynes, 3D analogues of benzyne, are a class of very useful synthons for the synthesis of a large variety of functionalized carboranes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in this interesting research field.

“…Thus, there is a growing interest in harnessing effective methods for their transformations [5] . Several methods have been developed for the synthesis of C‐functionalized carboranes through the use of carborane organometallic derivatives, decaborane derivatives, carboryne intermediates and others [5k, 6] . In comparison with these ionic reactions, radical reactions have several obvious advantages, including mild reaction conditions and high functional group tolerance.…”

“…To possibly generate even more topologies, the carborane skeleton can be coupled with various atoms (such as O, N, S, and P). 9,58,59 This is obviously different from other organic molecules and can be attributed to the uniqueness of the carborane skeleton. (ii) The introduction of dihydrogen-bond interactions to host−guest chemistry opens the door for encapsulating many guest molecules, especially those rich in C−H, O− H, and other bonds.…”

“…Icosahedral carboranes are an intriguing class of carbon–boron molecular clusters that exhibit 3D aromaticity and have various applications in medicine, materials science, and chemistry . Replacing one of the carboranes’ vertexes with metal ions leads to the formation of metallacarboranes, which have been extensively studied since their discovery by Hawthorne in 1965 .…”
