Functionalization of carbon black nanoparticles with poly(vinylidene fluoride)

Abstract: The surface of carbon black (CB) nanoparticles was functionalized with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) either by trapping of macroradicals or by cycloaddition. PVDF with two iodine end groups (I‐PVDF‐I) obtained from iodine transfer polymerization in supercritical CO2 was heated in the presence of CB and the CI bond was cleaved resulting in a reaction between the macroradical and the CB surface. To allow for cycloaddition of PVDF to the CB surface for a number of polymers, the iodine end groups were replaced… Show more

“…The nucleophilic substitution of the iodide for azides, previously described in the literature, 20 was successful and proved to be specific for those oligomers with the iodine coupled to CF2 groups. However, the subsequent 1-3 dipolar addition of the azido-OVDF to alkynes failed.…”

“…Beuermann and coworkers were the first to perform a click reaction for the synthesis of PVDF-b-PS diblock copolymers, 84 involving the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) of alkyne-terminated PS with azideterminated PVDF, prepared from an iodine-terminated PVDF precursor. 85 Narrow dispersities around 1.2-1.3, in between the values of the original homopolymers, were obtained from SEC analysis. The PVDF block was not able to crystallize when joined with PS.…”

“…As a consequence, the fraction of inactive –CF 2 –CH 2 –I chain ends increases with conversion. Previously, the active species, –CH 2 –CF 2 –I, was used for follow-up reactions [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]. In all cases, only the polymer with active end groups was used.…”
