Functionalization methods of SBA-15 mesoporous molecular sieve: a brief overview

Abstract: SBA-15 molecular mesoporous sieve has attracted great interest of researchers since its discovery in 1998, owing large area surface, well-defined pores, uniform pore size, high thermal and hydrothermal stability, well-defined pore structure and ability to be functionalized with diverse metal oxides (active phase of catalyst). This work contains a brief review of the main SBA-15 functionalization methods: direct synthesis, post-synthesis or post-grafting, deposition-precipitation, graft hybrid, colloid immobili… Show more

“…Furthermore, it can be functionalized with diverse metal oxides (active phase of the catalyst), resulting in high thermal and hydrothermal stability. 155–161 In addition, it exhibits great potential as a support for the active phase of heterogeneous catalysts and results in easy diffusion due to the minimum obstruction by the adjustment of its pore diameter. 162 In the preceding section, different DFNS- and MCM-41-modified catalysts for CO 2 fixation reactions were summarized.…”

“…Table 5 compares the porosity of SBA-15 (8 g, 30 min) produced in this study to those achieved by other researchers employing a hydrothermal technique and a variety of silica sources [17][18][19][35][36][37], and also to the commercial SBA-15. The SBA-15 prepared in this work, i.e.…”

“…This is an advantage when compared to micro materials such as zeolites [16]. SBA-15 was originally synthesized by Zhao et al [17] using a poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)poly(ethylene oxide) template commercially known as Pluronic P-123. SBA-15 has a two-dimensional hexagonal pore shape similar to MCM-41, but it has tiny mesopores on the pore walls that link parallel mesopores [18][19].…”

“…The silica-based ordered mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous (SBA) materials have been applied as catalyst carriers and as a key platform for fundamental studies toward developing efficient catalysts. [24][25][26][27][28][29] Among the silicabased porous materials, SBA-15 refers to the main subset of these materials and has been proven to be a powerful candidate for catalysis, [30][31][32] separation, [33][34][35] energy storage, [36][37][38] and drug delivery. [39][40][41] This material is assembled by micro-sized particles with a tunable pore size in a wide range of 6-12 nm and exhibits superior chemical and mechanical stability.…”
