Functionality and Quality of Life with Parkinson’s Disease after Use of a Dynamic Upper Limb Orthosis: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, neurodegenerative movement disorder, whose symptoms have a negative impact on quality of life and functionality. Although its main treatment is pharmacological, non-pharmacological aids such as the dynamic elastomeric fabric orthosis (DEFO) merit an evaluation. Our objective is to assess the DEFO in upper limb (UL) functional mobility and in the quality of life of PD patients. A total of 40 patients with PD participated in a randomized controlled crossover study, and were… Show more

“…Casting and splinting are commonly used for fractures and orthopedic injuries of the upper limb (1). This procedure is also applied to both upper and lower limbs in the treatment of chronic and acute neurological conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy, among others (2,3). Such interventions are recognized for contributing to favorable rehabilitation outcomes and alleviating symptoms of these diseases (4)(5)(6)(7).…”

“…Falls and loss of mobility can be key factors contributing to a decline in the quality of life, particularly in the older age group (7)(8)(9). Conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, among others, may result in some degree of loss of motor functionality, thereby creating a demographic that will seek healthcare services, either private or public, in their respective countries (10)(11)(12).…”
