Functional roles of non-coding RNAs regulated by thyroid hormones in liver cancer

Abstract: Recent reports have shown the important role of the non-coding part of human genome RNA (ncRNA) in cancer formation and progression. Among several kinds of ncRNAs, microRNAs (miRNA) play a pivotal role in cancer biology. Accumulating researches have been focused on the importance of non-coding genes in various diseases. In addition to miRNAs, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have also been extensively documented. Recently, the study of human liver cancer has gradually shifted to these non-coding RNAs that were o… Show more

“…A microarray study about hepatocellular carcinoma patients finds that the expression of HCG18 is enriched in the tumor tissues compared with the adjacent healthy samples. 21 LncRNA has become a candidate biological marker for a variety of diseases, especially as a non-invasive biomarker with special value in the prediction and diagnosis of liver diseases. 15 The plasma lncRNA LeXis is identified as an alternative biomarker of NAFLD by the ROC curve, which indicates lncRNA has prognostic possibility.…”

“… 20 In another analysis of hepatocellular carcinoma, the expression of HCG18 is differently expressed. 21 It seems that HCG18 may participate in the progression of liver dysfunction. Although some relationship between HCG18 and hepatocellular carcinoma has been unveiled, the mechanism of HCG18 involved in the development of NAFLD is still unsolved.…”

“…We observed differences in PROX1-AS1 expression level among gender and age groups; however, this was determined to not be statistically significant. Interestingly, PROX-AS1 expression in tumor and non-tumoral samples among gender showed very different trends between women and men, and this phenomenon could be caused by the differential hormonal regulation on long non-coding RNA expression [ 42 , 43 ].…”

“…One can easily loose track in the complex world of ncRNAs, but Huang et al. manage to focus on a concrete subset in their present review, centred on the role of ncRNAs controlled by thyroid hormones in liver cancer [ 40 ]. After a helpful introduction to all three abovementioned elements and their connections two by two, the authors provide a concise description of thyroid hormone-controlled miRNAs and lncRNAs with oncogenic or tumour-suppressor roles in liver cancer.…”
