Functional Role of the N400 and the P600 in Language-related ERP Studies with Respect to Semantic Processing: An Overview

Abstract: In this study, the language-related ERP studies relevant to the functional role of the N400 and P600 in semantically anomalous sentences and the underlying reasons which may affect their functions were reviewed. Since their discovery, the N400 and P600 have been the most important language-related ERP components. The N400 has been mostly elicited as a result of processing sentences with lexical and semantic anomalies, but later on, in many studies instead of the expected lexical-semantic N400 effect, semantic … Show more

“…Semantic anomalous sentences induce N400 components at the frontal electrode sites ( Seyednozadi et al, 2021 ). Therefore, four central electrode locations, FZ, FCZ, CZ, and CPZ, were selected to observe EEG waveforms to reflect the public’s cognitive attitudes toward renting and owning (See Figure 3 ).…”

“…Event-related potential (ERP) with millisecond resolution is an efficient and sensitive technique for characterizing subtle differences in semantic processing [6]. As reflecting the neural mechanism of language comprehension, the N400 and the P600 are the most important ERP components in language progressing [4,7].…”
