Trichogramma achaeae Nagaraja and Nagarkatti (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is currently used as biological control agent for several lepidopteran pests. Knowledge of thermal requirements is essential to optimize its rearing procedures and inundative releases. The biological characteristics and two-sex life table parameters of T. achaeae were determined at five constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) using Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. T. achaeae was able to develop and survive from 15 °C to 30 °C, but not at 35 °C. Temperature significantly affected the preadult development time and adult longevity, decreasing when temperature increased from 15 °C to 30 °C. Temperature significantly altered the sex ratio, being female biased between 15 °C and 25 °C. Age-stage, two-sex life table analysis indicated that net reproductive rate (R0) was highest at 20 °C. Both the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (λ) increased with increasing temperature, while the mean generation time (T) decreased significantly. In addition, functional response of T. achaeae was studied, being significantly affected by temperature and host egg density, displaying a Holling type-I at 15 °C and a Holling type-II at 25 °C. The relevance of these results is discussed for the use of T. achaeae as biological control agent.

BACKGROUNDThe effectiveness of a biological control agent depends on how well it can control pests and how compatible it is with pesticides. Therefore, we reported the multigenerational effect of a commonly used insecticide, imidacloprid, on the functional response of a widely acclaimed egg parasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, to different densities of the host Corcyra cephalonica Stainton eggs. The study investigated the outcomes of the median lethal concentration (LC50) and sublethal concentrations (LC5, LC30), along with control treatments for five continuous generations (F1 to F5).RESULTSThe results showed that the F5 generation of LC30, both of the F1 and F5 generations of LC50, and the control all had a Type II functional response. A Type I functional response was exhibited for the F1 generation of LC30 and both generations of LC5. The attack rate on host eggs treated with LC5 and LC30 did not change (decrease) with the shift in the type of functional response as compared to the control. A significant increase in the searching efficiency (a) was observed in the later generation (F5) under the exposure of LC5 and LC30 imidacloprid concentrations. A lower handling time (Th) in both generations of the LC5 followed by LC30 treated individuals was observed when compared with the control and LC50 treatments. The per capita parasitization efficiency (1/Th) and the rate of parasitization per handling time (a/Th) were also considerably higher in both the generations of LC5 and LC30 than in the control and LC50, thereby implying positive effects of imidacloprid on the parasitization potential of T. chilonis.CONCLUSIONAltogether, these multigenerational outcomes on the functional response of T. chilonis could be leveraged to control the intractable lepidopteran pests under the mild exposure of imidacloprid in integrated pest management (IPM) programs as well as in the mass rearing of the parasitoid, T. chilonis. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is the most important parasitoid of sugarcane borers in China. T. chilonis are produced from either rearing on Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Hymenoptera: Galleriidae) eggs in the laboratory or at factory level and released into the field to control sugarcane borers in China. Limited reports on the efficacy of different populations of T. chilonis in the sugarcane field against C. cephalonica are available. This study reports the parasitism efficacy and functional response of different T. chilonis populations against C. cephalonica under laboratory conditions. The number of eggs parasitized by the laboratory population of T. chilonis (total 57.05 eggs) on C. cephalonica was the highest among the different populations investigated; parasitism by the Baise population was the lowest (total 21.30 eggs). The parasitoid emergence rate of T. chilonis Baise population on C. cephalonica (102.16%) was the highest among the different populations, whereas that from the C. cephalonica laboratory population was the lowest (84.73%). The sex ratio (female/male) of T. chilonis laboratory population (3.51) was significantly higher than the other three sugarcane field populations. The functional responses of T. chilonis on C. cephalonica were determined as Holling type II. The search rate of T. chilonis laboratory population (1.0392) parasitizing on the eggs of C. cephalonica was higher than other Trichogramma populations, whereas the handling time (0.00809) was shorter than that of the other populations. The results from this study indicate that the origin of the population of T. chilonis can affect its parasitic ability upon C. cephalonica; therefore, further evaluation for control efficacy of different populations of T. chilonis against sugarcane borers, especially in the field, is warranted.
