Background The functional response of a predator is one of the fundamental methods in ecological studies. Typhlodromus (T.) setubali (Dosse) is an indigenous predaceous mite recently re-described in Morocco. It was reported on various crops around the Mediterranean basin. This study aims to assess the functional response of T. (T.) setubali to the densities of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 immature stages of Panonychus ulmi under the controlled conditions of 26 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5 % RH and 16:8 h L: D photoperiod. The logistic regression was used to determine the functional response and the oviposition activity of predator females was followed to evaluate the numerical response. Thereafter, both parameters (the attack rate (α) and handling time (Th)) were estimated and the results were entirely discussed. Results Logistic regression analysis revealed a Holling type II functional response, indicating that the number of P. ulmi killed by T. (T.) setubali females increased as the prey density increased. The values of attack rate (α) and handling time (Th) were 0.029 prey/ day and 0.573 prey, respectively. The oviposition of females increased above the prey density of 6.54 mites/cm2 and the highest value (m) was 1.86 eggs/ day. Finally, the prey density needed to achieve half the maximum response (n) was estimated to be 2.15 prey.Conclusions The functional response analysis is one of the most rigorous methods for understanding the ecophysiology of a predator. The proportions of prey consumed by T. (T.) setubali were higher at lower densities for P. ulmi immatures, implying that T. (T.) setubali should be more effective at suppressing the red spider mite populations at lower densities. Further laboratory-based studies are needed to draw biological conclusions.

Um dos principais problemas no consumo de flores comestíveis é o fato de que elas possuem alta perecibilidade pós-colheita, o que dificulta a sua comercialização e consumo. Por isso, é importante aplicar métodos de conservação para evitar perdas, e um desses métodos é a desidratação, comumente descrita pela cinética de secagem por meio de uma curva de secagem. O objetivo desse trabalho foi utilizar modelos matemáticos de regressão de modo a descrever o comportamento da flor Viola × wittrockiana durante a sua secagem. Dez modelos de regressão não-linear foram ajustados ao conjunto de dados de secagem obtido através de experimentação em uma temperatura de 30°C. Concluiu-se que o modelo que melhor se ajustou foi o de Midilli et al., e que, com o auxílio dele, pode-se prever a perda de massa da flor durante sua desidratação. Non-linear models applied to the drying kinetics of pansy edible flower ABSTRACT: One of the main problems in the consumption of edible flowers is the fact that those possess high perishability post-harvest, and it difficult its commercialization and consumption. Therefore, it is important to apply conservation methods to avoid losses, and one of these methods is dehydration, commonly described by drying kinetics through a drying curve. This work aims to use mathematical regression models to describe the behavior of the flower Viola × wittrockiana during its drying period. Ten non-linear regression models were adjusted to the data set, which was obtained by experimentation in a 30°C temperature. The study concluded that the model that was the foremost adjusted was the Midilli et al., and that, with the assistance of this model, it is possible to predict the weight loss of the flower during its dehydration. The coffee red mite [Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor, 1917)] (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae) is one of the main causes of conilon coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre & Froehn) crop damage due to its phytophagous habit. Nowadays, environment and human harmful synthetic pesticides are used to control this pest. In this context, plant-derived bioactive compounds have been studied as a sustainable alternative for the pest mite management in crops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the castor (Ricinus communis) seed oil action on eggs, larvae, nymph (protonymph and deutonymph) and adults of O. ilicis. Coffee leaf discs (4 cm in diameter) containing 12 individuals of O. ilicis were sprayed with castor seed oil at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% (v/v) using airbrush. The ovicidal and mortality activity of this extract were evaluated against O. ilicis. The effective concentration of castor oil to cause 50% inhibition of O. ilicis larvae hatching (LC 50) was 1.26% (v/v). Oligonychus ilicis treated with this oil at a concentration of 3.0% presented a larvae hatching percentage of 29.3%, lower than that obtained for the control treatment (79.1%). Castor seed oil 3.0% (v/v) was highly toxic to nymphs and adults of O. ilicis with mortality of 96 and 88%, respectively. Castor seed oil was effective for larvae hatching inhibition and nymphs and adults mortality of O. ilicis, being promising for the coffee red mite sustainable biocontrol.
