Functional Properties of Sinocaval Conduction

Abstract: Previously we have reported that in the rabbit the sinus node impulse spreads not only to the atrial muscle but also to the musculature in the venae cavae proximal to the heart10, 19). On the basis of this result, Mashiba and coworkers have introduced into electrophysiology the concept of sinocaval conduction. Recently ARITA and coworkers reported on the mechanical activity of the vena caval muscle of the rabbito. Further studies on the sinocaval conduction of the rabbit have revealed that the transmission of … Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that there was conduction block in the SVC. 3,6 We identified multiple ionic currents in SVC cells, which was similar to the nature of cardiac cells or PV cardiomyocytes. 11 Half of the SVC cardiomyocytes have I f and thus have properties similar to those of PV or atrial cardiomyocytes.…”

“…6 The presence of cardiomyocytes with pacemaker activity suggests that automaticity may play a role in the arrhythmogenic activity of the SVC. The presence of DAD in SVC cardiomyocytes also suggests that triggered activity has a role in SVC electrical activity.…”

“…There are several reports about the extension of atrial muscle into the SVC 7,8 and its excitability. 9,10 The question of anatomic inputs from the RA to the SVC, however, has not been addressed.…”

“…8 -16 However, only limited data are available on PAF originating from the superior vena cava (SVC) in humans. [12][13][14][17][18][19][20] Therefore, this study was conducted to (1) investigate the electrophysiological features and results of radiofrequency ablation in patients with spontaneous AF initiated by ectopic beats originating in the SVC and (2) compare the characteristics of ectopic foci originating in either the SVC or PVs.…”
