Functional outcomes of motor vehicle crash thoracic injuries in pediatric and adult occupants

Abstract: Older adults had significantly greater overall disability than each of the other age groups for thoracic injuries. The developed disability metrics are important in quantifying the significant burden of injuries and loss of quality life years. Such metrics can be used to better characterize severity of injury and further the understanding of age-related differences in injury outcomes, which can influence future age-specific modifications to AIS.

“…Chest injury was 2.6 times more common than abdominal injury in this study. This is in liaison with reports stating thoracic injury as one of the commonest MVA-related injuries [ 7 , 9 ]. Thoracic trauma commonly accompanies TSIs, especially at the dorsal spinal level.…”

“…The motor vehicle accident is a high-energy trauma mechanism with substantial risk for multiple spinal and nonspinal injuries [ 17 ]. The odd for MVA-related multiple injuries increases with the vehicle speed at the collision [ 8 , 9 ]. Among MVA-related injuries, thoracoabdominal injuries are serious.…”

“…Among survivors to discharge, we assessed duration of mechanical ventilation, ICU and hospital length of stay (LOS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), 11 and discharge disposition. FIM was assessed by bedside nurses at hospital discharge for patients ≥7 years, [12][13][14] with three domains of feeding, expression, and locomotion each scored from 1 (most impaired) to 4 (normal function). Post-discharge care included inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, other acute care, inpatient psychiatric care, and home healthcare services.…”

“…Thoracic and abdominal traumas are common among victims of MVAs [ 14 , 15 ]. Thoracic injury is considered the second most common cause of mortality and major injury after HI [ 16 ]. Abdominal injury also contributes to trauma-related deaths following MVA and accounts for 10% of injuries due to MVAs [ 17 ].…”
