Functional outcome after thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair

Abstract: Permanent loss of functional capacity, measured at a mean of 5 years postoperatively, occurs rarely in survivors of TAA repair. Further studies are needed to define the role of hybrid or endovascular strategies, including their impact on long-term functional outcome compared with open TAA repair.

“…3 Current OSR of DTAA and TAAA can anticipate good short-term and long-term technical and functional out-comes. 3,22 Although recent reports have begun to espouse similar notions in the endovascular management of acute aortic syndromes, this perception is not fully proven. 4,5 This is likely reflected in the relatively consistent use of TEVAR across census tract regions compared with the significant variability with OSR (Fig 4).…”

“…40 Beyond the perioperative period, where postoperative complications and length of stay have been shown to reduce quality of life, aneurysm extent has been shown to have no effect on long-term quality of life. 41 These factors warrant further investigation because they will be important determinants in clinical decision making as endovascular technologies evolve.…”

“…Endovascular repair is appealing, because many believe that extensive aortic operations may adversely affect long-term quality of life (QoL) [9,10]. Few studies, however, have evaluated QoL after extensive thoracoabdominal aortic operations [9][10][11], and no study has specifically evaluated this in patients with MFS. MFS, a systemic connective tissue disorder, has many cardiovascular and noncardiovascular symptoms that affect QoL [12].…”
