Functional MR Imaging during Hypercapnia and Hyperoxia: Noninvasive Tool for Monitoring Changes in Liver Perfusion and Hemodynamics in a Rat Model1

Abstract: In the liver, the magnitude of the percentage change in SI induced by hypercapnia and hyperoxia reflects changes in total blood volume; whereas percentage change in SI values induced by hypercapnia from a negative to a positive value reflects relative changes in portal-to-arterial blood flow ratio.

“…25 In this study, in control mice PHx was followed by a decrease in both ⌬Sco 2 and ⌬So 2 , reflecting a decrease in liver vascularity and blood content. In contrast, in the livers of Casp8 F/Ϫ :Alb-Cre mice, 4 days after PHx both parameters increased (Fig.…”

“…Changes in hepatic hemodynamics were evaluated using T * 2 -weighted GRE (TR/TE=147/10ms). The images were acquired following the protocol in [2] and co-registered since the mice are fixed and immobilized under anesthesia. When metastases became large (18 days after tumor cells injection, and above), the mice were sacrificed, and their livers were taken for histology.…”

“…We have recently demonstrated the sensitivity of hemodynamic response imaging (HRI), a functional BOLD MRI, where transient alterations in inspired gases from normoxia to hypercapnia and subsequently to hyperoxia enable the evaluation of renal oxygenation, perfusion and vascular reactivity without the need for injected contrast agents [14]. This method, first applied in hepatic imaging [15], has been found particularly applicable in the kidney, where altered vascular reactivity may be both a hallmark for and a causative parameter in the pathogenesis of renal impairment.…”
