Functional Lumen Imaging Probe for the Management of Esophageal Disorders: Expert Review From the Clinical Practice Updates Committee of the AGA Institute

Abstract: The functional luminal imaging probe (FLIP) is an FDA approved measurement tool utilized to measure simultaneous pressure and diameter to both diagnose and manage various upper gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, this tool is also approved to guide therapy during bariatric procedures and specialized esophageal surgery. While it has been commercially available since 2009, as the endolumenal functional lumen imaging probe (EndoFLIP ®), the FLIP has had limited penetrance into clinical settings outside of s… Show more

“…With the advent of EndoFLIP®, EGJ dysfunction and other disorders of the stomach and bowels may be better evaluated. Data are accumulating that are providing guidance regarding emerging applications in the evaluation and management of foregut disorders [24]. Reduced esophageal distensibility could occur after ESD.…”

“…This is synchronized to a singular pressure measure within a fluid‐filled bag and thus permits an assessment of luminal geometry and pressure akin to compliance measurement. This technique has been used to assess the mechanical properties and dynamics of the esophageal wall and EGJ in patients with esophageal symptoms and in those with an established diagnosis of GERD, achalasia, or EoE . Data on GERD patients did not provide evidence of the utility of FLIP in their diagnosis and management.…”

“…Another proposed tool to help in assessing the degree of fibrosis is the functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP). This instrument obtains esophageal metrics simultaneously to assess esophageal distensibility [25]. In a study by Nicodeme et al, reduced esophageal distensibility as detected by FLIP technology was associated with an increased risk for food impactions in EoE patients [26].…”
