Functional lignocellulosic materials prepared by ATRP from a wood scaffold

Abstract: Wood, a natural and abundant source of organic polymers, has been used as a scaffold to develop novel wood-polymer hybrid materials. Through a two-step surface-initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP), the porous wood structure can be effectively modified with polymer chains of various nature. In the present study, polystyrene and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were used. As shown with various characterization techniques including confocal Raman microscopy, FTIR, and SEM/EDX, the native wood ultrastr… Show more

“…In our case, the BiBB molecules are introduced inside wood with pyridine (an excellent wood swelling solvent). BiBB molecules are relatively small and highly reactive: they have been shown to react deep inside the cell wall structure . In order to grow a polymer chain in the next step, both monomers and catalyst complex need to reach the initiating sites.…”

“…In most cases, activated carboxylic acids such as anhydrides or acid chlorides are used. It is also possible to attach ATRP initiators, such as BiBB . In previous works, we have shown the effect of different reaction parameters (reaction time, solvent, BiBB concentration, and year ring distribution) on the resulting BiBB WPG.…”

“…With increasing energy demand and requirements for environmental conservation, replacement of petroleum‐based materials with bio‐based materials is an interesting opportunity. Wood from trees is a key resource in the Northern Hemisphere due to its abundance (global number of trees ≈3 trillion), excellent mechanical properties, and potential for functionalization . The chemical composition with high‐strength cellulose nanofibrils and complex hierarchical structure are important factors contributing to the excellent properties of this native composite .…”

“…The prepared multifunctional macroinitiator is functionalized in the next step by incorporating well‐defined polymeric arms . Moreover, ATRP stands out other advantages including preparation of well‐defined hybrid composites with narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs) and control over molecular weight (MW) . In the case of complex architecture, ATRP is favorable due to control of polymer topology and site‐specific incorporation of functionalities .…”
