Functional Foods for Health: The Interrelated Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Role of Fruits, Vegetables, Herbs, Spices and Cocoa in Humans

Abstract: The health benefits of plant food-based diets could be related to both integrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms exerted by a wide array of phytochemicals present in fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices. Therefore, there is mounting interest in identifying foods, food extracts and phytochemical formulations from plant sources which are able to efficiently modulate oxidative and inflammatory stress to prevent diet-related diseases. This paper reviews available evidence about the effect of supplemen… Show more

“…week. Our ndings are consistent with the known antioxidant properties of some foods (47)(48)(49). It is to mention that in our study fruits consumption had a negative correlation with oxidative stress in all the 290 women, however, in the distinct subgroups of 100 OC-users and 190 non-OC-users such negative correlation did not reach statistical signi cance, thus, fruits effects will require further research (48).…”

“…In clinical studies, assessing antioxidative and anti‐inflammatory properties of fruit juices, pomegranate juice (100 cc/day for 1 year) (Hosseini, Saedisomeolia, Wood, Yaseri, & Tavasoli, ), and concentrated pomegranate juice (50 g/day for 4 weeks) (Shishehbor et al., ) decreased interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) level (Hosseini et al., ; Shema‐Didi et al., ; Shishehbor et al., ) or decreased lipid and protein oxidation markers levels (Hosseini et al., ; Shema‐Didi et al., ) in patients with type 2 diabetes (Shishehbor et al., ), patients on hemodialysis (Shema‐Didi et al., , ), and overweight or obese adults (Hosseini et al., ; Serafini & Peluso, ). Cranberry juice (700 mL/day for 60 days in a parallel design) significantly reduced lipid and protein oxidation markers levels and increased the anti‐inflammatory adiponectin level in patients with metabolic syndrome (Simão et al., ).…”

“…Throughout history, natural substances were widely used to treat various diseases [1]. Food of plant origin is associated with health-profitable benefits [2] related to bioactive compounds [3]. Phytochemicals are bioactive non-nutrients found in fruit, vegetable, or other plant sources exerting antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and other beneficial effects [4,5].…”
