The study of pore characteristics is of great importance in reservoir evaluation, especially in deeply buried sandstone. It controls the storage mechanism and reservoir fluid properties of the permeable horizons. The first member of Eocene Shahejie Formation (Es1) sandstone is classified as feldspathic litharenite and lithic arkose. The present research investigates the pore characteristics and reservoir features of the deeply buried sandstone reservoir of Es1 member of Shahejie Formation. The techniques including thin-section petrography, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscope images were used to demarcate the pores including primary intergranular pores and secondary intergranular, intragranular, dissolution and fracture pores. Mercury injection test and routine core analysis were led to demarcate the pore network characteristics of the studied reservoir. Pore size and pore throat size distribution are acquired from mercury injection test. Porosity values range from 0.5% to 30%, and permeability ranges 0.006-7000 mD. Pore radii of coarse-grained sandstone and fine-grained sandstone range from 0.2 to > 4 µm and 1 nm to 1.60 µm, respectively, by MICP analysis. The mineral composition also plays an important role in protecting the pores with pressure from failure. Fractured sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone consist of large and interconnected pores that enhance the reservoir porosity and permeability, whereas fine-grained sandstone and siltstone consist of numerous pores but not well interconnected, and so they consist of high porosity with low permeability.

Fracture detection and in‐situ stress determination via well logs are important for exploration and exploitation of subsurface hydrocarbons. Cores, thin sections, and image logs are used to describe and interpret the subsurface fractures and in‐situ stress in the Paleogene Dongying sandstones in Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China. The maximum horizontal stress (SHmax) indicates a nearly east‐west trend according to the borehole breakouts and drilling‐induced fractures. Natural fractures in the Dongying sandstones are classified into: (1) open fractures and (2) closed fractures. The cement‐filled (closed) fractures are commonly detected by image logs as bright discontinuous sinusoidal waves due to resistive filling materials, while the open fractures are evident on image logs appearing as dark sine waves. The open fractures are of dominantly high dip angles, and the rose diagrams confirm the presences of two sets of fractures: northwest‐southeast and northwest‐southeast orientation. Fractures with strikes approximately parallel to the SHmax have good connectedness, making a significant contribution in hydrocarbon production. In addition, the oil‐bearing layers are mainly associated with the intervals with open fractures. The presence of natural fractures provides important pore spaces and fluid flow conduits. Insights can be provided into the subsurface fracture (natural and induced) detection and characterization using image logs.

The Bohai Bay Basin is the second largest oil-producing basin in China located on the east Asian margin. The Bohai Bay Basin contains numerous depressions, sub-basins, and sags. One of these, the Nanpu Sag, has played a particularly important role in oil and gas exploration in recent years. Four depositional systems are recognized in the Nanpu Sag, fan-delta, braided-river delta, turbidite deposits, and lacustrine systems. In the Paleogene, the Nanpu Sag underwent complex and multi-phased rifting evolution. Two evolutionary phases have been identified: the syn-rift phase and the post-rift phase, the syn-rift stage can be further subdivided into four episodes. This study reveals the considerable faulting activity and associated strong subsidence that occurred during the deposition of the Dongying Formation in the fourth episode of the syn-rift stage. The depositional systems and the tectonic activity during the fourth episode in the Nanpu Sag have very different characteristics compared to those of other depressions or sub-basins in the Bohai Bay Basin. Boundary fault activity was extremely intense during the deposition of the Dongying Formation, especially the east to west trending faults, including the Xinanzhuang Fault and the Gaoliu Fault.
