This article briefly overviews the main types of raw materials used to synthesise ceramic membranes. Traditional materials such as aluminium oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, zeolites, and cost-effective materials like various clays and industrial waste are highlighted. Modern methods for producing high-performance ceramic membranes are discussed, including slip casting, tape casting, pressing, extrusion, solid state method etc. The general scheme for preparing a selective layer on a ceramic membrane using various methods for synthesising it is also examined. Furthermore, the cost of commercial ceramic membranes and influencing factors are analysed. Based on contemporary literature, ceramic membranes exhibit distinct advantages over polymer membranes with their potential for application under high temperature, high pressure, and aggressive environments. Additionally, their energy efficiency, compactness, and versatility make them a viable alternative for water purification, replacing more expensive methods like coagulation and adsorption. Ceramic membranes have become a competitive alternative to polymer membranes, showcasing unique material properties and excellent characteristics. Using cost-effective materials for ceramic membrane fabrication allows for utilisation in economically sensitive sectors. Such membranes demonstrate excellent mechanical properties and high permeability, while inexpensive materials can reduce costs. Current scientific research and developments focus on utilising various clays and waste materials to produce ceramic membranes, aiming to create new generations of ceramic membranes for environmentally friendly applications.

Fiber spraying processes have been established for polymer matrix composites for decades. In this study, we transferred an automated fiber spraying process to short fiber bundle‐reinforced Nextel 610/ Al2O3‐ZrO2 oxide fiber composites (SF‐OFC). The effect of the processing factors travel height, spray angle, and movement speed on the specimen strength was analyzed in a full factorial experimental design. As a result, the significance of the travel height as well as the interaction between travel height and movement speed was demonstrated. Furthermore, the influence of the fiber length (14, 28, 56, and 112 mm) on the bending stress and strain was investigated. Independent of the used fiber length, the SF‐OFC exhibited an excellent quasi‐ductile fracture behavior with bending strains in the range of .6% and in‐plane isotropic material properties. The average bending strength increased from 133 ± 27 MPa with 14 mm fiber reinforcements to 163 ± 29 MPa with 112 mm fibers. The achieved bending strengths clearly exceeded the off‐axis properties of currently used fabric‐reinforced OFC. These properties, combined with the excellent drapability and cost effectiveness, make the novel material highly promising for industrial applications such as flame tubes, burner nozzles, kiln furnitures, or foundry components.

Catalytic Membrane Reactors: The Industrial Applications Perspective

Catalytic membrane reactors have been widely used in different production industries around the world. Applying a catalytic membrane reactor (CMR) reduces waste generation from a cleaner process perspective and reduces energy consumption in line with the process intensification strategy. A CMR combines a chemical or biochemical reaction with a membrane separation process in a single unit by improving the performance of the process in terms of conversion and selectivity. The core of the CMR is the membrane which can be polymeric or inorganic depending on the operating conditions of the catalytic process. Besides, the membrane can be inert or catalytically active. The number of studies devoted to applying CMR with higher membrane area per unit volume in multi-phase reactions remains very limited for both catalytic polymeric and inorganic membranes. The various bio-based catalytic membrane system is also used in a different commercial application. The opportunities and advantages offered by applying catalytic membrane reactors to multi-phase systems need to be further explored. In this review, the preparation and the application of inorganic membrane reactors in the different catalytic processes as water gas shift (WGS), Fisher Tropsch synthesis (FTS), selective CO oxidation (CO SeLox), and so on, have been discussed.
