Functional Community Organization of Macroinvertebrates in Lotic Habitats of the Plitvice Lakes Funktionelle Organisation der Makroinvertebraten‐Gemeinschaft in den lotischen Habitaten der Seen von Plitvice

Abstract: The community and trophic structure of benthic macroinvertebrates were studied in different types of habitats in the karstic Plitvice Lake system located in the NW Dinarid mountains (Croatia). The spatial distribution of functional macroconsumer groups shows that longitudinal community functional organization doesn't correspond with the River Continuum Concept (RCC) hypothesis. Collector guilds were the most abundant functional feeding groups at all the sites analyzed. The domination of shredders was found onl… Show more

“…The values of pH and EC did not show any important fluctuations in Prošćansko Lake considering either depth or sampling site during the study. Prošćansko Lake has been described by its thermal characteristics as a holomictic lake (due to complete water mixing) and dimictic for its spring and autumn water circulation (20) as it was also proven by the results of this study.…”

“…In Croatia, 7 genera and 15 species of scirtids have been discovered so far [11,[25][26][27][28][29][30]. Mičetić Stanković et al [11,31] studied them as part of the water beetle community in karst lotic habitats and provided the first data on the biology and ecology of the family in these habitats.…”

“…Karst streams of the Balkan Peninsula (i.e., in the Dinaric region along the eastern Adriatic) are characterized by tufa formation from calcium carbonate precipitation (Ford & Pedley 1996). Tufa formations (i.e., lakes, underwater barriers, waterfalls, cascades and channels) considerably increase stream spatial heterogeneity providing extensive smallscale variations in hydromorphological habitat conditions and community assemblage (Habdija et al 1994;Sertić Perić et al 2011). Small-scale spatial heterogeneity within karst tufa-depositing streams is greatly enhanced by the presence of moss-rich patches (Habdija et al 2004;Sertić Perić et al 2011).…”
