Functional characterization of MANNOSE-BINDING LECTIN 1, a G-type lectin gene family member, in response to fungal pathogens of strawberry

Abstract: Fragaria × ananassa mannose-binding lectin gene, FaMBL1, is a member of strawberry G-type lectin family involved in strawberry defense. Genome-wide identification of G-type lectin gene family was carried out in F. vesca, where 133 G-lectin genes were found. Their expression profile was retrieved from available databases showing that many G-lectin genes are actively expressed during strawberry development or interaction with pathogens. Hence, stable transgenic strawberry plants overexpressing the FaMBL1 gene we… Show more

“…On the contrary, OE of FaSRT1-2 led to the opposite effects (Figure 6). There are also a lot of reports documenting the upregulation of the expression of anti-biotic stress genes (MBL1, PAL1, PGIP, TLP1b) and genes encoding antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT) in the resistance of strawberry and tomato against B. cinerea (Ma et al, 2023).…”

“…Only few G-type LecRLKs have been functionally characterized. CaMBL1 from pepper ( Capsicum annuum ) and FaMBL1 from strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa ) are examples of G-type LecRLKs where the lectin domain was shown to bind cell wall mannose from Xanthomonas campestris , Colletotrichum fioriniae and Botrytis cinerea ( Hwang and Hwang, 2011 , Ma et al, 2022 ). Not all identified G-type LecRLKs make use of their carbohydrate-binding properties in the interaction with pathogenic ligands.…”

“…Apart from SRKs, only a few SD‐RLKs have been described in more detail. They are involved in plant–pathogen interactions and symbiosis or abiotic stress responses (Walker & Zhang, 1990; Tobias et al ., 1992; Tobias & Nasrallah, 1996; Chen et al ., 2006, 2013; Kim et al ., 2009a,b; Gilardoni et al ., 2011; Cheng et al ., 2013; X. Although a growing number of members of the large SD‐RLK sub‐family are being characterized, their ligands, receptor complex formation, and downstream signaling mechanisms remain largely unknown.…”
