Functional bioactive compounds in ginger, turmeric, and garlic

Abstract: Nutrition plays a very important role in the health promotion of individuals and brought about a global paradigm shift from pharmaceuticals to nutraceuticals. This is due to the high cost, non-availability, and side effects associated with the unregulated consumption of pharmaceuticals. Over the ages, nutraceuticals from food products were reported to contain bioactive compounds with great health and physiological benefits. This report reviews bioactive compounds in selected foods namely ginger (Zingiber offic… Show more

“…Ginger notably exhibited a significantly higher (p < 0.05) quantity of flavonoids compared to garlic. These findings align consistently with previous studies [ 22 , 25 , 27 ]. Methanolic extracts derived from ginger have shown a higher concentration of flavonoids in comparison to aqueous extracts obtained from garlic [ 22 ].…”

“…Medicinally significant plants and spices are routinely utilized in healthcare and veterinary applications across Asia. The compounds present in ginger and garlic, such as gingerol, shogaol, and allicin, are known for their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity [ 25 ]. Additionally, the metal content in garlic and ginger, including zinc, copper, iron, and manganese, may also play a role in their antibacterial activity [ 26 ].…”

“…15,16 Their work also revealed low LDL concentrations in regions of low shear stress. 13,17 Plaque stenosis has been reported to present higher anterograde motion in patients with stenosed carotid arteries. This anterograde motion was found to be directly proportional to plaque severity, and blood flow patterns in stenosed carotid arteries notably gave better estimates of motion compared to nonstenosed arteries.…”
