“…A modified version of Katz model of functional status assessment [19,20] was used to determine the ADL score. This modified version of the Katz Index is an ordinal index that easily allows a brief assessment of the physical functioning of the elderly and chronically ill patients admitted in the Internal Medicine wards of the UHC.…”

“…This modified version of the Katz Index is an ordinal index that easily allows a brief assessment of the physical functioning of the elderly and chronically ill patients admitted in the Internal Medicine wards of the UHC. A dichotomous rating (dependent/independent) of six major areas of ADL functions (in order of increasing dependency): bathing, dressing, going to the toilet, transferring from bed to chair, continence, and feeding, assigned patients to a six-point scale of dependence [20]. Cognitive impairment was determined at admission and was based on a ten question questionnaire, the short portable mental status questionnaire (SPMSQ), in which patients were given a score of 1 for each incorrectly answered question [21].…”

“…Both scales are widely used tools to check ADL in elderly people and have been noted to be simple and efficient assessment instruments. In particular the IADL correlated with cognitive function (Barberger-Gateau et al, 1992;Katz, 1989). In 1998, with the permission of Dr Lawton, we used the Japanese versions of the PSMS and IADL to examine their usefulness in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and found the two Japanese versions to have satisfactory reliability and validity, as observed for the original.…”

“…A total of six fitness tests were conducted, namely 2-minute step (endurance), back scratch (upper body flexibility), chair sit and reach (lower body flexibility), chair stand (lower body strength), timed up and go (TUG) (balance and mobility), handgrip strength (upper body strength), and rapid pace gait speed tests. The activity of Daily Living (ADL) [33] and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) [34] was also administered to assess the functional status.…”
