Functional and Morphological Variety in Trunk Muscles of Urodela

Abstract: Trunk musculature in Urodela species varies by habitat. In this study, trunk musculature was examined in five species of adult salamanders representing three different habitats: aquatic species, Amphiuma tridactylum and Necturus maculosus; semi-aquatic species, Cynops pyrrhogaster; terrestrial species, Hynobius nigrescens and Ambystoma tigrinum. More terrestrial species have heavier dorsal and ventral trunk muscles than more aquatic forms. By contrast, the lateral hypaxial musculature was stronger in more aqua… Show more

“…Observation the specimens: The morphology of a lifeform often reflects the functions it needs for survival. This theory has been observed to hold many times in aquatic and marine life (Omura, Anzai, and Endo, 2014;Omura, Anzai, Koyabu, and Endo, 2015a,b;Omura, Ejima, et al, 2015;Omura and Endo 2016). Therefore, we showed various shapes and explained the convenience of each shape.…”

“…Trunk muscles were treated as 3 groups of muscles, namely the dorsal muscles, lateral hypaxial muscles and abdominal muscles, from the functions and positions according to Naylor [12] and Omura et al . [13, 14]. Dorsal muscles, lateral hypaxial muscles and abdominal muscles were examined from the cross-sectional images (Fig.…”

“…Functional morphology clarifies the function of cephalopod shape and how their form relates to ecology. The lecturer specializes in functional morphology and comparative anatomy of aquatic life (Endo et al 2012;Omura et al 2014;Omura 2014. Therefore, to invite children to understand ecology by observing shape, we constructed courses from a functional morphological point of view.…”
