Functional and Morphological Brain Alterations in Dysthyroid Optic Neuropathy: A Combined Resting‐State fMRI and Voxel‐Based Morphometry Study

Abstract: Background: Increasing evidence has indicated that the entire visual pathway from retina to visual cortex may be involved in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) pathological mechanisms. Purpose: To explore the functional and morphological brain characteristics in DON and their relationship with ophthalmologic performance. Study Type: Retrospective. Population: A total of 30 DON patients, 40 thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) without DON patients and 21 healthy-controls (HCs). Field Strength/Sequence: A 3.0 … Show more

“…Resting-state functional MRI is a prevalent tool in neuroimaging research, facilitating a better comprehension of cognitive impairment in individuals with TAO. Recently, there has been a growing body of research utilizing resting-state MRI techniques to explore the spontaneous brain activity in patients with TAO [8,9]. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) is a method used to assess the level of regional synchronization in time series data between a specific voxel and its nearest neighboring voxels [10].…”

“…The diplopia of TED is related to inflammation or fibrosis of the orbital contents, especially the extraocular muscle [5]. TED threatens vision, especially in dysthyroid optic neuropathy and exposure keratopathy [6]. TED imposes psychological and economic burdens on patients and affects their quality of life [7].…”

“…In this issue of JMRI, Zhang et al further examined the morphological and functional brain alterations in DON using resting‐state functional MRI (rs‐fMRI) 7 . This method is widely used in neuroimaging studies to assess brain alterations in healthy and clinical populations 8–10 .…”

“…Thus, the authors recommend future research to combine structural covariance network and functional brain network analysis to provide a deeper understanding of structural and functional brain alterations in DON. Despite these caveats, the publication by Zhang et al advances our knowledge about brain alterations in DON patients 7 …”
