“…Research in the areas of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) indicates that many of the individuals with these diagnoses display various types of behavior problems such as aggression, self‐injury, noncompliance, and elopement (e.g., American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Matson & Nebel‐Schwalm, 2007; Neidert et al., 2013). Although these behaviors range in severity, it is documented that such behavioral issues can negatively impact all aspects of one's life, including increased emergency room use and overprescription of medication (Kalb et al., 2016), increased expulsion from school (McIntyre et al., 2002), reduced employment (e.g., Hendricks, 2010), reduced social opportunities (e.g., Cunningham & Schreibman, 2008), and increased possibility of restraint and conclusion (Butler, 2012).…”
