Function of semicircular canals, utricles and saccules in deaf children

Abstract: Vestibular function tends to be preserved up to a point where hearing is nearly extinct. Hearing level correlates more closely with otolith function, especially that of the utricle, than with semicircular canal function.

“…Among these children, 8% showed asymmetric VEMP responses and 34% showed no VEMP responses on either side, indicating that approximately 40% of these children with profound hearing loss have dysfunction of the inferior vestibular system on at least one side. This finding is compatible with the finding in previous studies in terms of the percentage of children showing inferior nerve system dysfunction [Tribukait et al, 2004;Shinjo et al, 2007].…”

“…VEMPs have been extensively studied primarily in adult subjects since VEMPs require neck contraction during recording. However, several recent studies have shown that VEMPs can be recorded from infants and children in almost the same way as adults [Tribukait et al, 2004;Jin et al, 2006;Kelsh et al, 2006;Shinjo et al, 2007]. Tribukait et al [2004] recorded VEMPs in 39 deaf children between the ages of 15 and 17 years and reported that VEMPs were absent bilaterally in 22% and asymmetric in 19%.…”

“…1,2,4,5 Several studies [2][3][4]14 have demonstrated vestibular deficits in deaf children, although there is a wide range of incidence. Our study of saccular function by VEMP testing showed a high percentage of abnormality in hearingimpaired children.…”
