“…While there were no significant changes in the FISI scores, quality of life measures may be more sensitive to subtle changes in continence. 18 The FISI scores did not show significant changes after surgery in our patients. Of note, 7 patients had a higher FISI score postoperatively than preoperatively.…”

“…18 This study used the FIQL and retrospectively measured preoperative continence with the Wexner continence scale. They found continence to be impaired after TAE; however, patients had a good quality of life.…”

“…7,8 advantages are the lower costs of the disposable ports, 360° visibility, and the use of standard laparoscopic instruments, which may also lead to a more readily available use. although favorable functional results have been reported after tem, 5,16,17 conceptually, the use of flexible ports in comparison with the rigid tem apparatus might lead to less damage on the anal sphincter complex during surgery, because these ports are more malleable and might allow for a better fit within the anal canal. however, the movements of the portal could be more extreme compared with tem and might damage the sphincter complex.…”

“…Sexual dysfunction has been poorly studied in women; however, the Dutch TME Trial reported a decrease in sexual activity from preoperative levels [ 8 ] and a nonsignifi cant increase in vaginal dryness and dyspareunia in nearly 30% of women treated with preoperative radiation and TME. In contrast, Fenech et al [ 9 ] surveyed 58 patients who underwent TAE of a rectal lesion. Their survey demonstrated that although postoperative continence scores were slightly worse than preoperative scores, the quality of life was preserved in their population.…”
