“…Cylindrocarpon-like fungi) in apple plant growth reduction on ARD affected soils was presented (Manici et al, 2013. More recently, numerous studies on microbial community analyses of ARD soils were published, strongly fostered by new sequencing technologies (Rumberger et al, 2007;Tewoldemedhin et al, 2011;Yim et al, 2013Yim et al, , 2015Yim et al, , 2016Sun et al, 2014;Caputo et al, 2015;Franke-Whittle et al, 2015;Mazzola et al, 2015;Hewavitharana and Mazzola, 2016;Nicola et al, 2017). These total DNA based analyses confirmed previous data on changes in the microbial community composition in replant soils.…”

“…Although the overall bacterial composition was similar among samples, the distribution of each phylum or group varied. Healthy apple trees and a more diverse soil microbial community appear to be tightly coupled, possibly giving rise to metabolic differences in parallel substrate processing in soils . Our results indicated that more unclassified species occurred in healthy soil and melatonin‐treated replant soil, which was reflected by their higher diversity indices.…”

“…Soil disinfection by heat or chemical means is effective, but ecologically harmful and expensive. Chemicals used for soil fumigation are toxic and nowadays include mainly dazomet or metam sodium (both releasing methyl isothiocyanate) as well as 1,3-dichloropropene/chloropicrine [23,[35][36][37]. Interest is shown in developing sustainable management options to potentially replace chemical soil fumigation.…”
