Most of the essential oils (EO) known for mosquitocidal activity contain terpenes as part of their chemical constituents. In this study, four monoterpenes namely γ‐terpinene (T), R‐(+)‐limonene (L), carvacrol (C), and trans‐anethole (A) were screened against late third instar Aedes aegypti Linn. larvae singly and in combination to find out the synergistic interaction. The monoterpenes γ‐terpinene, R‐(+)‐limonene, trans‐anethole, and carvacrol showed larvicidal activity with LC50 values of 9.76, 11.88, 50.19, 48.57 ppm and LC90 values of 16.99, 17.78, 65.21, 75.02 ppm, respectively for Ae. aegypti when tested individually. Prepared binary combinations at LC20 values and studied the synergistic interactions based on cotoxicity factor (CTF) and found that all the binary combinations showed synergistic interactions (CTF > 20). Further, the binary (1:1), ternary (1:1:1), and quaternary (1:1:1:1) terpene combinations on equal weight basis were prepared, evaluated against Ae. aegypti larvae and synergistic interactions were studied by Wadley's method. Among the eight combinations two combinations viz. LC (LC5010.42 ppm) and LA (LC5011.86 ppm) were showing synergistic interactions (R > 1.5) and others were exhibiting additive effect (1.5 ≥ R > 0.5) and none of the combinations showed antagonism (R < 0.5). Among the two methods used the Wadley's method found suitable when combinations were made on an equal weight basis. The two binary combinations found in this study are promising synergistic mixtures which has scope in designing mosquito larvicidal EOs by enriching the EOs with terpenes or by producing EO combinations with these terpenes as chemical constituents in the correct proportions.

Ticks are some of the most devastating ectoparasites of livestock causing several tick borne diseases.Management of ticks is increasing getting difficulty using synthetic acaricides due their rapid tolerance to the synthetic acaricides. Botanical acaricides are now used as an alternative management strategy to curb such problems. The blue tick, Rhiphicephalus (Boophilus) decolaratus, is a one-host tick that parasitizes cattle and vectors a debilitating protozoan parasite that causes babesiosis. Acaricidal properties of thyme were investigated on the cattle blue tick, R.B. decolaratus using various concentrations to establish the lethal dose concentration. The acaridal activity of thyme on ticks was monitored and recorded at two-hour intervals for 48 hours. Tick mortality was observed at all concentrations except the control. The lowest mortality rate was observed for 10µl/cm 3 while 40µl/cm 3 resulted in total tick mortality. The LC 50 was established as 1,9µl/cm 3 . Significant differences (p<0.01) were observed between concentrations, however the mortality was directly proportional to thyme concentration. The thyme oil dehydrated the ticks leading to death within 48 hours. The study thus concludes that thyme oil can be used as a complimentary or alternative acaricide in an integrated livestock program or where organic means are enforced or to as a way of minimizing tolerance of ticks to conventional acaricides.

Studies examining the use of essential oils as replacements for synthetic insecticides require an understanding of the contribution of each constituent present, interactions among these components, and how they relate to overall toxicity. In the present study, the chemical composition of commercial thyme oil was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thyme oil and blends of its major constituents were tested for their acaricidal activitities against carmine spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval)) using a slide-dip bioassay. Natural thyme oil showed greater toxicity than any single constituent or blend of constituents. Thymol was the most abundant component (34.4%), and also possessed the strongest acaricidal activity compared with other single constituents. When tested individually, four constituents (linalool, terpinene, p-cymene and carvacrol) also had activity, while α-pinene, benzoic acid and ethyl gallate had almost no activity. The toxicity of blends of selected constituents indicated a synergistic effect among the putatively active and inactive constituents, with the presence of all constituents necessary to reach the highest toxicity. The results indicated that thyme oil and some of its major constituents have the potential to be developed into botanical acaricides.
