Fumaric Acid Therapy in Psoriasis: A Double-Blind Comparison between Fumaric Acid Compound Therapy and Monotherapy with Dimethylfumaric Acid Ester

Abstract: In a 4-month double-blind study the effects of dimethylfumaric acid esters (DMFAE-EC) and DMFAE plus salts of monoethylfumaric acid esters (fumaric acid combination, FAC-EC) in enteric-coated tablets were compared in 22 respectively 23 patients with psoriasis. In both groups about 50% showed a considerable improvement, i.e. the initial score was more than halved. “…This systemic therapy has been proven to be effec tive in 50-70% of the cases [1][2][3], although serious side effects, e.g. lymphopenia and nephrotoxicity, have been described [4][5][6], DMF appeared to be the most effective component [1,7]. Topical application of FA [8] and MEF has been advocated [9], but a left/right comparison with a 3% MEF ointment in a limited number of psoriasis patients gave disappointing results [1): insufficient clearing of the lesions was accompanied by perilesional skin irritation.…”
