“…Fumaric acid esters (FAEs) regulate mitochondrial function and are associated with the regulation of the glutathione redox cycle [ 32 , 35 ]. Depending on the dose and type of fumarate, FAEs can decrease or enhance cell viability, mitochondrial oxygen consumption and glycolysis rates [ 30 ].…”

“…Fumaric acid, in the concentration range we applied, has a well-established role as an antioxidant in both pure systems and cell cultures [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Thus, it is highly probable that it exerts its protective effect through the alleviation of oxidative stress and the restoration of the redox balance in frozen–thawed buck spermatozoa.…”

“…Fumaric acid is an α,β‐unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, playing an important role in the Krebs cycle. Its esters, used for the treatment of psoriasis, are available in two oral forms: Fumaderm®, a defined mixture of several forms of fumaric acid esters (FAE) and salts, launched by Fumapharm in 1994 in Germany, and Skilarence®, which contains pure dimethyl fumarate (DMF; Figure 5) and was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2017 and launched by Almirall in the UK 88,89 . Other than dermatology, DMF is also sold by Biogen for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (Tecfidera®).…”
