“…Owing to the potential genetic contribution to the disease onset, it is of great significance to further characterize PF in the Chinese population. Since the recognition of fulminant type 1 diabetes, a few cases and small group epidemiologic studies have been reported in China [5][6][7][8][9]. Rare PF cases had been reported.…”

“…It has been used to include forms of ketosis‐prone diabetes rarely seen in Caucasians such as that initially described in West Africans and African‐Americans (reviewed in 4) and subsequently in other ethnic groups (5), but it should be noted that obesity and relatively well‐preserved residual beta‐cell function were features in those of African descent. Type 1B also includes fulminant diabetes initially described in Japan (6), where it may account for 15–20% of new‐onset type 1 diabetes (7), and subsequently elsewhere in Asia (8, 9). Fulminant diabetes is an acute insult to both the endocrine and exocrine pancreas, with widespread infiltration by mononuclear cells and elevated concentrations of serum pancreatic amylase, elastase and lipase, in individuals with HLA susceptibility genes for type 1 diabetes.…”
