Fulminant sepsis caused byBacillus cereusin patients with hematologic malignancies: analysis of its prognosis and risk factors

Abstract: Bacillus cereus is a growing concern as a cause of life-threatening infections in patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the risk factors for patients with unfavorable outcomes have not been fully elucidated. At our institution, we observed the growth of B. cereus in blood culture in 68 patients with (23) or without (45) hematologic malignancies treated from September 2002 to November 2009. We defined a case as having sepsis when more than two blood culture sets were positive for B. cereus or only a … Show more

“…This pathogen is a common cause of food poisoning (1,2) and may cause septicemia, surgical wound infection, pneumonia or meningitis in immunocompromised patients (3). Akiyama et al reported the case of a patient with ported 12 cases and analyzed a total of 58 previously reported cases of B. cereus septicemia in patients with hematologic malignancies (5). Their analysis indicated that acute leukemia, a neutrophil count of near 0/μL or the presence of central nervous system (CNS) symptoms during febrile episodes are associated with fatal prognoses.…”

“…However, outbreaks of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) have been sporadically reported in association with a specific hospital environment or linens (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Multiple fatal cases with serious B. cereus CRBSI were recently reported (3,6,(13)(14)(15)17).…”

“…A dual-chamber bag system for PPN solutions has been developed and distributed throughout Japan (26). The timing of the product development indicates that there may be an association with B. cereus BSI published in case reports (9,10,(12)(13)(14)(15)17).…”

“…Of these various infections, B. cereus bloodstream infection (BSI) seems to be the most severe condition. However, clinical patient reviews for all inpatients have not been performed, except for immunocompromised patients [5,7].…”
