Fully Mechanical Vertical Drilling System Delivers RSS Performance in Vertical Drilling Applications While Providing an Economical Alternative to Conventional Rotary Steerable Systems Set-Up for Vertical Hold Mode

Abstract: Deviation control in a vertical well (or the vertical portion of a directional well) can be challenging, especially when pushing the limits for maximum penetration rate. Over the years rotary steerable systems (RSS) have been adapted to fit the vertical drilling market. These electro-mechanical directional control systems are set-up to seek low-side but they come at a relatively high cost of RSS. This paper describes a purpose-built 100% mechanical vertical drilling system. The vertical drilling… Show more

“…When the well deviation angle is small, the eccentric moment of the eccentric block is always less than the friction torque of the plate valve, and there is no intersection point between the parabola and the x-axis. At this time, the real number solution of the critical deflection angle cannot be obtained by Equation (10). There is no deceleration area in the circumferential direction, and the eccentric block will rotate clockwise in one direction.…”

“…Compared with the EVDS, the MVDS has a relatively low deviation control accuracy, but it possesses a simple structure without any electronic components, which can reduce the sealing requirements of drilling tools. In addition, the MVDS has many advantages, such as low manufacturing cost, high reliability, high temperature resistance, and greater impact resistance [9,10]. Therefore, the MVDS has a better application prospect in the future and the key problem we are facing is the improvement of its deviation correction performance.…”

“…More important, the all-metal structural design can withstand higher temperatures and high temperature environments such as ultra-deep wells and vertical wells with abnormal geothermal gradients. So, it becomes the only way to achieve active correction during drilling in high temperature and ultra-deep wells [9][10][11].…”

“…However, the drilling industry have to face the reality of low oil and gas prices in present, drilling costs needed to be reduced further. 7 The development of fully mechanical vertical drilling tool (MVDT) was perfectly adapted to the current economic situation. MVDT has the following advantages: (a) low costs due to its fully mechanical structure, (b) high temperature resistance, (c) high suitability and reliability without electric components, and (d) high bearing capacity for larger weight on bit (WOB) and rate of penetration (ROP).…”

“…(c) Eccentric block-locate the mud control valve through holding itself on lower side of borehole due to gravity. 7 The eccentric block is mounted on outer cylinder using bearings, by which the eccentric block could freely rotate around its axle. An upper plate valve is rigid connected with the eccentric block, and there is an opening opposite to the eccentric block.…”
