Fullerene acting as an electron donor in a donor–acceptor dyad to attain the long-lived charge-separated state by complexation with scandium ion

Abstract: A long-lived charge-separated (CS) state of fullerene-trinitrofluorenone linked dyad in which fullerene acts as an electron donor is formed by photoinduced electron transfer from C60 to TNF in the presence of Sc(OTf)3; the CS lifetime is determined as 23 ms in PhCN at 298 K.

“…In a fullerene–trinitrofluorenone conjugate, photoexcitation and the presence of Sc(OTf) 3 leads, indeed, to the formation of oxidized fullerenes, whereas only the triplet excited state of the fullerene was observed in the absence of Sc(OTf) 3 . 13 No successful intramolecular oxidation of fullerenes by means of simple photoexcitation has ever been reported.…”

“…Fullerene and porphyrin are the most popular compounds used in designed chromophore sequences. 20 Prolonged charge-separated states result from starburst tetra(diphenylaminofluoreno) [60]fullerene adducts upon photoexcitation, 21 photoinduced electron transfer in an oligo(thienylenevinylene):fullerene composite is observed, 22 a fullerene acting as an electron donor in a donor-acceptor dyad to attain the long-lived charge-separated state by complexation with scandium ion was reported, 23 and energy transfer in oligofluorene-C 60 and C 60 -oligofluorene-C 60 donor-acceptor conjugates has been observed. 24 One of the purposes for studying photoprocesses in a designed chromophore is to fabricate new efficient solar cells.…”
