In order to study the aerodynamic responses of a vehicle pitching around its front wheel axle, large eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate the flow-field around road vehicle. The numerical method is validated by 1/3-scale wind tunnel model on steady state. The LES results keep good agreement with the wind tunnel data. Furthermore, LES is applied to simulate the sinusoidal-pitching motion of vehicle body with frequency 10Hz. It can be found that the aerodynamic force coefficient and flow field changed periodically when the vehicle body takes periodically motion, whose results are completely different from the quasi-steady simulation results. When vehicle body suddenly changes direction, the hysteresis effects of the flow is clearly shown through investigating the transient flow field, aerodynamics force coefficient and pressure coefficient. The hysteresis effects of the transient flow field is also studied by vortices visualization technical, and the transient flow field from space and time is further understood.

In this study, vehicle stability under crosswind conditions is investigated. A two-way coupling method is established based on computational fluid dynamics and vehicle multi-body dynamics. Large eddy simulation is employed in the computational fluid dynamics model to compute the transient aerodynamic load, and the accuracy of the large eddy simulation is validated with a wind tunnel experiment. The arbitrary Lagrange–Euler technique is used in the computational fluid dynamics simulation to realise vehicle motion, and a real-time data transmission method is employed to ensure effective exchange of data between the computational fluid dynamics and multi-body dynamics models. The robustness of the two-way coupling model is verified by changing the position of the vehicle centroid. The results of the two-way and one-way coupling simulations demonstrate that crosswinds significantly affect vehicle stability. There is a clear difference between the results obtained with the two methods, particularly after the disappearance of the crosswind. The main reason for the difference is that the interaction between the transient airflow and the vehicle movement is considered in the two-way coupling method. Therefore, investigations of vehicle stability under crosswind conditions should consider the coupling of transient aerodynamic force and vehicle movement.

With the rapid development of the high-speed railway in China, the problems of the noise pollution induced by passing trains emerge. Theoretically, the V-shaped noise barrier is of pretty good performance of noise-reduction and load-shedding. To assess the practical aerodynamic deloading characteristics of the V-shaped noise barrier, a full-scale field test was carried out at three measuring-sections equipped with noise barriers of different heights. In order to quantify the research work, the impact strength and deloading rate were selected as indicators. The effects of train speeds, train types and barrier heights are studied. This study includes the variations of impact strength and deloading rate in vertical directions. Meanwhile, 2D numerical simulation research is conducted to analyze the experimental results from the angle of mechanism. It is observed that the aerodynamic load acting on the surface of the V-shaped noise barrier was weaker and more uniform compared with conventional barrier. The flow field distribution influenced the deloading characteristics of the V-shaped noise barrier significantly. Moreover, the load-shedding effect of V-shaped noise barrier, when CRH380AM passed by, was slightly better than CRH380A. The deloading rate improved with the increasing of the noise barrier height in general.
