In this paper, a vertical drop test of a full composite fuselage section of a regional aircraft has been presented. This test was performed to investigate the structural response of a prototype of a composite fuselage section as well as the biomechanical response of the anthropomorphic dummies under a vertical crash loading condition. The research activity, carried out within the framework of Metodi di CERtificazione e Verifica Innovativi ed Avanzati (CERVIA) ‡ ‡ project, allowed collecting suitable amount of data for the assessment of the reliability of numerical models. The test article consists of a composite fuselage section with a diameter of 3445 mm and a total length of 4750 mm. It includes all main structural components, the passengers, and the cargo floor structure. Fuselage section has been also equipped with an aeronautical three-seat row. The accelerations, recorded in different locations, demonstrate that the structure is able to absorb a considerable impact energy amount, thus to mitigate the acceleration levels induced to the passengers.

Landing impact load design is essential, but the process has rarely been fully described, and some designers have even neglected the differences between wheel-axle and ground-contact loads, as well as loads in the longitudinal direction, especially in experimental validations. In this paper, the entire design process of a nose landing gear is addressed, including a theoretical analysis of the unit and its experimental validation. In the theoretical analysis, a mathematical model of a two-mass system with four degrees of freedom was adopted, a computer simulation model was built accordingly, and a preliminary analysis was subsequently conducted to analyze the landing impact loads, verify the landing gear performance, and gauge the difference between the wheel-axle and ground-contact loads. For the experimental validation of the gear, a landing gear drop test was conducted in an optimized manner that emphasized pre-test preparation and during-test wheel-axle load measurement. The test results showed that both the vertical and less studied longitudinal loads, as well as the wheel-axle and ground-contact loads, had good agreement with the analysis; thus, the model, the tool, and the preliminary design were considered to be experimentally validated.

Robust Preview Control and Autoregressive Prediction for Aircraft Automatic Carrier Landing

This paper studies an automatic carrier landing control problem of fixed-wing aircraft with system uncertainties under the airwake and deck motion disturbances. A robust preview control scheme and an autoregressive (AR) model prediction scheme are originally applied to the automatic carrier landing system (ACLS). The AR model is used to predict the deck motion, which corrects the reference glide slope for relative motion compensation. A novel robust preview control scheme based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) is proposed for the uncertain nonlinear systems with external disturbances, to make the aircraft track the corrected reference glide slope and reject the airwake disturbance. Simulation results exhibit the better carrier landing performance of the robust preview control scheme than the PID control and robust control schemes.INDEX TERMS Automatic carrier landing system, robust control, preview control, deck motion prediction, airwake, aircraft.
