Full Polarizability Matrix Extraction Formulas for Electrically Small Particles via Reflection/Transmission Coefficients

Abstract: A class of rigorous formulas for the efficient extraction of the full polarizability matrix of electrically small particles is introduced in this paper. After the dipole approximation of the scatterer, under study, the latter is placed on a two-dimensional square array, illuminated by four normally incident plane waves, and eventually its polarizabilities are expressed in terms of induced dipole moments. Then, by applying an equivalent surface model for the array, the induced dipoles are calculated as a functi… Show more

“…After the required electric field values are substituted into (6), the required polarisabilities are provided in Figure 5. Similarly with the previous example, all outcomes are of the anticipated form, with very limited to no artefacts, in (Asadchy et al, 2014;Karamanos and Kantartzis, 2018). It is noteworthy to mention that polarisability a xy em is, herein, non-zero confirming the bianisotropic nature of the particle, while non-zero values of the a xzx E term are observed in the vicinity of both resonances.…”

“…To this aim, in Figure 6(b), it can be detected that q xz has a confined contribution in the TRP at the first resonancewhich explains the success of dipole-only methods in such situationsbut it turns significant in the second one, in full accordance with the investigation of Chen et al (2015). Overall, the extraction of quadrupolarisability a xzx E and the addition of the respective quadrupole in the scattering model, pushes the multipole representation up to the level of l =2-2l =3, which is a promising improvement to the conventional l =4 dipole approximation limit (Karamanos and Kantartzis, 2018). Therefore, nanoparticles that possess quadrupole resonances and only the q xz moment can, now, be very accurately and consistently represented through polarisabilities for a large assortment of metamaterial or metasurface applications (Boratay Alici et al, 2013;Castaldi et al, 2013;Liu and Kivshar, 2018).…”

“…To apply modular analysis to the meta-atom, one needs first to determine all these components. Several techniques for polarizability extraction have been proposed during the last decade [24][25][26][27][28], but none of them allows calculation of all the polarizability components simultaneously. In this paper, the approach based on scattered-far-field probing [25] is extended [22] and utilized.…”
