Full circuit calculation for electromagnetic pulse transmission in a high current facility

Abstract: We describe herein for the first time a full circuit model for electromagnetic pulse transmission in the Primary Test Stand (PTS)-the first TW class pulsed power driver in China. The PTS is designed to generate 8-10 MA current into a z-pinch load in nearly 90 ns rise time for inertial confinement fusion and other high energy density physics research. The PTS facility has four conical magnetic insulation transmission lines, in which electron current loss exists during the establishment of magnetic insulation. A… Show more

“…Great works were also done on small devices with peak current about 1MA or less, such as the MAGPIE [30] in the Imperial College, the Qiangguang-I facility in the Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology [11,12], and the PPG-I in the Tsinghua university [14]. The new generation driver of China, 10MA PTS facility [15][16][17], was founded in 2013, based on which a series of theoretical and experimental work were carried out for the Z pinch and ZPDH studies.…”

“…As the pulse width is shortened, the power increases, and finally a 100ns wide, tens of MA current is formed in the load region. Since the Z-pinch implosion is strongly coupled to the generator, circuit models [11,16,17,31] were setup and coupled with RMHD models to get the integrated simulation from generator discharge to the Z-pinch implosion and radiation. Thus, circuit simulation is not only an important tool for the driver design, operation and maintenance, but also an effective means for experimental design and analysis.…”

“…The correction monotonically decreases the loss current from the space-charge-limited current to zero as the magnetic field approaches and exceeds the cutoff magnetic field, similar to the corrections described in Refs. [26,27]. In the circuit model of the Z accelerator, the results are not sensitive to the exact form of the correction because the MITLs become magnetically insulated early in the pulse, and the electron losses prior to magnetic insulation are negligible.…”

“…Circuit simulation tools are usually used to estimate the operating parameters such as peak voltage, pulse duration and amplitude of conduction current for each component in the induction cavity [21,22]. They provide the designing criteria for each component.…”
