Full characterisation of a background limited antenna coupled KID over an octave of bandwidth for THz radiation

Abstract: We present the design, fabrication, and full characterisation (sensitivity, beam pattern, and frequency response) of a background limited broadband antenna coupled kinetic inductance detector covering the frequency range from 1.4 to 2.8 THz. This device shows photon noise limited performance with a noise equivalent power of 2.5 × 10−19 W/Hz1∕2 at 1.55 THz and can be easily scaled to a kilo-pixel array. The measured optical efficiency, beam pattern, and antenna frequency response match very well the simulations. Show more

“…We explain the anticorrelation between NSD and grAl gap using a phonon trapping model in the surrounding Al ground plane. The measured NEP values for grAl MKIDs, scaled for maximum absorptance to allow for a fair comparison between different film resistivities, are in the range of 25 aW/ √ Hz, and are comparable to state of the art [16,[73][74][75][76].…”

“…Yet the system demonstrated in this Article should be regarded as a narrow-band, single-pixel demonstrator, when compared to the vast potential scalability of the on-chip filterbank spectrometer concept. By using quarter-wavelength bandpass filters 17 and wideband antennas, 18,19 the filterbank can be naturally extended to a bandwidth of 1:3 (1.5 Octave). 9 For a 1:3 broad band system the out-of-band coupling of the individual filters must be below −40 dB with respect to the peak power coupling to limit out-of-band power loading the detectors.…”

“…There are two main families of MKIDs: lumped element KIDs ("LEKIDs') [22] and lens-antenna coupled distributed MKIDs [23], [24]. The lumped element devices are easier to fabricate and assemble; the aluminum-based lens-antenna coupled devices are more flexible decoupling the KID optimization and the optical coupling allowing radiation coupling in principle at any wavelength from 3.3 mm (90 GHz) to 30 μm (10 THz) [25] by merely changing the antenna design. Around one mm wavelength aluminium LEKIDs and antenna coupled MKIDs have shown similar performance [7], [8], [18].…”
