Fuel-Water emulsion impact on miniature gas turbine pollutant emission

Abstract: The innovative use of the Fuel-Water emulsion in a small gas turbine for distributed energy generation is proposed. The FWE in this situation is considered as a nonhomogeneous mix of water and fuel, where water is a dispersed phase in the continuous fuel phase with an addition of surfactants. The Fuel-Water emulsion has a great mainly due to two mechanisms: temperature reduction due to heat absorption by the water phase and enhanced homogeneity of the fuel-air mixture due to micro-explosion of the superheated … Show more

“…The latest research result [49,103,104] of the Polish research team working on miniature turbine engines at the Institute of Heat Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology bring similar results. FWEs based on the base fuel consisting of a mixture of Jet-A1 with AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 (manufactured by Shell plc) in the mass ratio of 95: 5, 2% mass addition of emulsifier to the fuel and water in the amount of up to 12% of the mass of the mixture were tested.…”

“…It should be added that the experimental studies conducted on the influence of the emulsifier on the combustion process in miniature TG turned out to be very helpful in the context of the interpretation of the results of the research on the combustion process of the fuel-water emulsion in the TG chamber presented in the works [28][29][30], in which this emulsifier was used for creating fuel-water emulsions.…”

“…Research is also conducted on the effect of feeding gas turbines with FWE. In gas turbines (TG), there is a tendency to lower the temperature of the exhaust gases and reduce NOx emissions [25][26][27][28][29][30]. However, as is the case with reciprocating units, there are also discrepancies in the studies regarding the impact of FWE on CO emissions.…”

“…They were aimed at verifying the suitability of the emulsion prepared on the basis of the emulsifier described below as a fuel. The effect of the application of these fuel-water emulsions and emulsifier on the operating parameters and emission from a miniature gas turbine was described in [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] .…”
