Fuel consumption and emission reduction by using a CVT in series with conventional multi-speed transmission

Abstract: Fuel economy is a growing concern for both manufacturers within the automotive sector and consumers. Increasing government legislation is driving towards greener vehicles with reduced CO2 and NOx emissions and greater fuel economy, especially within urban environments. Manufacturers use new technologies in their powertrain systems to tackle these problems. This paper simulates and evaluates the performance of using a half toroidal CVT in series with a conventional multi-speed transmission, by analysing differe… Show more

“…As previously seen in the work of Oglieve et al (2017) and Walker et al (2019) it can clearly be seen that the gear ratios of the vehicle's transmission can significantly affect the fuel economy. The optimum gear ratios can allow for the ICE to operate in more economic regions of the BSFC map.…”

“…However, consumer behaviour affects the adoption of different technologies due to many different factors including affordability, lifestyle, consumer loyalty and trust, legislation, generational views and environmental and Sustainability concerns (Brown et al, 2014). Many efforts have gone into simulating drive cycles to investigate system level models with integrated component levels models to evaluate different and novel powertrains (Oglieve et al, 2017;Walker et al, 2019;Dalby et al, 2019).…”
