Fuel-cell breathalyser use for field research on alcohol intoxication: an independent psychometric evaluation

Abstract: BackgroundSeveral field studies have used fuel-cell breathalysers (FCB) to investigate the prevalence of alcohol intoxication. However, there is a lack of evidence evaluating the psychometric properties of these breathalysers outside of the forensic disciplines.MethodsThe current research describes four studies designed that assess the reliability and validity of portable platinum FCBs for research on alcohol intoxication. Utilising the Alcolizer LE5 breathalyser and, to a lesser degree, the Lifeloc FC-20 and … Show more

“…While we can be confident that measured BACs were accurate [47], we do not know which phase of drinking participants were when breathalysed. Specifically we do not know if BACs were measured at peak alcohol levels or during the rising or falling limb of the blood alcohol curve.…”

“…This device is used by law enforcement agencies throughout Australia and South East Asia, is Australia Standard 3547 certified, and has an accuracy of greater than 0.005 at 0.100 BAC g/100 mL. It has been demonstrated to have high reliability and validity for measuring intoxication in a sample of people attending nighttime entertainment districts [47].…”

“…Individuals were breathalysed using the Alcolizer LE5, which is the only hand-held breathalyser which has been demonstrated to have good reliability and validity in field trials (Sorbello, Devilly, Allen, Hughes and Brown, 2018). All questionnaires were completed by participants on iPads using QuickTapSurvey.…”
