FTIR Spectroscopy - A Potential Tool to Identify Metabolic Changes in Dementia Patients

Abstract: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) diagnosis frequently relies on patient's cognitive evaluation deficits and exclusion criteria often implemented in advanced stages of dementia, when it is too late for effective therapeutic intervention. In order to improve early AD diagnosis and therapeutic interventions, novel approaches for AD biomarker identification and validation need to be developed. These comprise metabolomics based strategies, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) that has gained increasing … Show more

“…Such a band was not detected in our spectra. Also, amide A band near 3,300 cm −1 (Sevinc et al, 2015;Nunes, 2016) and Tyrosine shoulder near 1,515 cm −1 (Venyaminov and Kalnin, 1990;Goormaghtigh et al, 1994;Barth, 2000), the latter is characteristic band typical for second derivative spectra of proteins, were not apparent in our spectra.…”

“…The peaks at 1395 and 1166 cm −1 originate from COO − symmetric stretching of fatty acids and C─OH antisymmetric stretching of serine and tyrosine, respectively. [56][57][58][59] To acquire the quantitative differences in these spectral peaks observed in the loading plots of the groups under study, spectral band area ratios for relevant peaks were calculated from their absorbance spectra. The band area ratio results of these peaks are shown in Fig.…”

“…The coagulation might have compromised the essential roles of lipids in the haemolymph necessary for utilising energy, information signalling, and hence normal embryogenesis. Interestingly, thermal stress led to lower metabolic activity in the range (3000 cm −1 – 3600 cm −1 ), suggesting small changes in amides A and B regions (protein conformation) and membrane lipids [43].…”

“…Averages of three replicates spectra across conditions and aphid clones were analysed and compared. The comparison was made for functional groups/wavelengths related to the metabolism of carbohydrates (1000 cm −1 – 1300 cm −1 ), proteins (1400 cm −1 – 1800 cm −1 ), and lipids (2700 cm −1 – 3000 cm −1 ) [24,43].…”
