FT Protein Movement Contributes to Long-Distance Signaling in Floral Induction of Arabidopsis

Abstract: In plants, seasonal changes in day length are perceived in leaves, which initiate long-distance signaling that induces flowering at the shoot apex. The identity of the long-distance signal has yet to be determined. In Arabidopsis , activation of FLOWERING LOCUS T ( FT ) transcription in leaf vascular tissue (phloem) induces flowering. We found that FT messenger RNA is required only transiently in the leaf. In additi… Show more

“…The gibberellin (GA) pathway plays a relatively independent role in floral transition under noninductive photoperiods (Araki, 2001). Among these pathways, the photoperiod pathway is largely dependent on phloem activity, since the signals induced by photoperiod, CONSTANS and its downstream target FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) are expressed in the vasculature and the mobile flowering signal FT needs to be transported through the phloem to the meristem (Corbesier et al, 2007;Mathieu et al, 2007). The floral transition times of nakr1-1 and Col-0 were measured under different floral promotion conditions.…”

“…After perceiving flowering-inducing long days, the key regulator of the photoperiodic pathway, CONSTANS (CO), activates FT (FLOWERING LOCUS T) in the leaf vasculature. The FT protein is transported to apical meristems, where it triggers the floral transition 5 . SOC1 (AGL20) and FUL (AGL8) are MADS box genes acting downstream of FT in apical meristems, but they are already expressed in leaves-independently of FT-during the vegetative phase.…”
