“…The EDS energy spectra (Figure 4g−j) show that the ambient-dried ASMs are mainly composed of Si, O, and C elements, showing a relatively uniform distribution, which proves that the raw materials are well mixed in the slurry stage, and fumed silica powder does not gravitationally settle during the gelation process. Figure 6a shows the FTIR spectra of fumed silica, MTMS, and the ASM-5:5-20 sample, the disappearance of the characteristic peak of silane (Si−O−C) located at 1190 and 1086 cm −1 , 43 and a broader characteristic absorption peak of silica (Si−O−Si) was observed at 1105, 1032, and 780 cm −1 , 44 which proves that the hydrolysis−condensation reaction of MTMS silane is fully catalyzed by nitric acid and urea. The peak intensity of hydroxyl groups of ASMs at 3390 cm −1 was significantly weaker than that of fumed silica, suggesting that the hydroxyl group on the fumed silica backbone is involved in the condensation reaction during the gelation process.…”
