Fruits and vegetables moderate blood pressure, fibrinogen concentration and plasma viscosity in Nigerian hypertensives

Abstract: Fruits and vegetables contain vital components such as potassium, antioxidants, vitamins and folic acid that might contribute to lowering blood pressure which is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disorders. However, the results of the few investigations on the correlation between intake of fruits and vegetables and cardiovascular disease have been inconsistent. Worse still, there is dearth of information on disease prevention with fruits and vegetables in Africans. Thus, we investigated the relative effect… Show more

“…Okra consumption among other fruit vegetables were found beneficial in moderating blood pressure, fibrinogen concentration and plasma viscosity in Nigerian hypertensives (Adebawoo et al, 2007) Problems of okra production in Nigeria are insect pest infestations, disease incidence and poor soil nutrient level. It has become a common sight to find numerous perforations on the leaves of okra usually caused by herbivorous insects, which is almost being accepted as a common feature of the crop (Egwuatu, 1982).…”

“…It is easy to grow and use, and also looks great throughout the growing season due to its beautiful flowers. It is also rich in vitamins, calcium, potassium and other minerals (Tindall, 1986;Poggio, 2005;Duvauchelle, 2011) and low in calories (Adebawoo et al, 2007). Its mucilage is suitable for medical and industrial applications.…”

“…Often, the extract obtained from the fruit is added to different recipes like soup, stews, and sauces to increase the consistency [4][5][6] . The green immature pods or fruits of okra contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, β-carotene, vitamins (B1, B2, and B6), niacin, and vitamin C, as well as calcium and iron, which are beneficial in moderating blood pressure, fibrinogen concentration, and plasma viscosity in hypertension [7,8] . Okra originated in east Africa, quite possibly in Ethiopia [9] but its cultivation is widely distributed to the tropics and subtropics.…”
