Fruitful first experience with an 8K ultra‐high‐definition endoscope for laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Abstract: We performed laparoscopic surgery for three cases of colorectal cancer using an 8K ultra-high-definition endoscopic system, which offers 16-fold higher resolution than the current 2K high-definition endoscope. The weight of the camera has been successfully reduced to 370 g. To maximize the advantages of the 8K ultra-high-definition endoscope, surgery was performed by darkening the room and placing a large 85-in. display as close to the surgeon as possible. As a result, the autonomic nerve was preserved, and th… Show more

“…The 8K UHD laparoscopic camera weighed > 2 kg in 2014, but its weight was reduced to 370 g by Kairos Co. Ltd., and its commercial distribution as a medical device was approved in 2017. 11 Because the 8K laparoscope has 16 times higher resolution than a conventional high-vision laparoscope (1,920 Â 1,080 pixels), it has become possible to identify fine blood vessels and membrane structures and distinguish important nerves that were previously difficult to identify visually. 11 We used the 8K UHD laparoscopic system to examine the hepatic portal region of a child with biliary atresia who was undergoing KPE, and observed slight bile outflow.…”

“…The basic premise of the 8K-UHD camera with a rigid endoscope for microscopic use is illustrated in Figure 1A and the new 8K-UHD camera with a macro lens in Figure 1B. Previous 8K-UHD images were captured using our former endoscopes design [6,7,8]. In these cases, a relay lens connects the target side to the 8K-UHD camera.…”

“…In 2014, the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure using 8K UHD/2K laparoscopy was reported [ 2 ]. In the recent years, the application of 8K UHD laparoscopy has been extended to various operations, including the laparoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer [ 3 ].…”
