Fruit and seed biometry of cambuí (Myciaria tenella O. Berg)

Abstract: -The cambuí tree (Myrciaria tenella O. Berg) is native to Brazil and its fruits are harvested by extraction for fresh consumption in the state of Sergipe (Brazil). Because of the regional importance of the species, this work aims to characterize the cambuí fruits and seeds. The fruits were harvested mature from native trees in the Reserva do Caju Experimental Field, on Itaporanga d'Ajuda (Sergipe, Brazil), belonging to Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros. Two hundred fruits and seeds were biometrically analyzed. In a… Show more

“…The fruits had an average weight of 0.76 g, with the highest values found in AC132. These results agree with those reported by Silva et al [13] in the evaluation of the biometry of fruits of the same species. In guabiju fruits (Myrcianthes pungens), the average weight was 2.87 g [14], and for Campomanesia rufa, 10.88 g [15], species belonging to the Myrtaceae family.…”

“…O. Berg, popularly known as “cambuí” or “murta‐do‐campo”, is also a native Brazilian species occurring from the north to the south region [5] . It is a shrub with small lanceolate leaves and globose red to dark purple fruits about 9 mm in diameter, used for consumption in natura and as jellies [8,10] . Leaves of M. tenella have been used by the native population for their astringent, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anti‐inflammatory actions [11] .…”
